10 Tips for Moving House with Children

Moving house with young children doesn't have to be chaos. Our practical tips help you keep kids calm, involved, and excited about the new adventure.

Involve Them Early

Tell children about the move as early as possible and in age-appropriate language. For younger children, frame it as an exciting adventure to a new home. Answer their questions honestly.

Let Them Pack Their Own Box

Give each child their own special box to pack with their favourite things. Label it with their name and ensure it travels in the car with you, not the removal van — so their treasures are always close by.

Take Photos of the Old Home Together

Before you leave, walk through the old house taking photos together. This gives children a sense of closure and something to look back on. Include their bedroom, garden, and favourite spots.

Keep to Routines as Much as Possible

Children find change easier when other aspects of life stay constant. Keep mealtimes, bedtimes, and routines the same during and after the move to provide stability.

Prioritise Their Bedroom First

When you arrive, set up the children's bedrooms first. Having a familiar, cosy space to retreat to makes a huge difference to how children feel on the first night in a new home.

Explore the New Area Together

Once settled, make a point of exploring the new neighbourhood as a family. Find the local park, the sweet shop, the library. Building new 'favourite spots' helps children feel at home faster.
