Moving House with Pets: A Complete Guide
Moving is stressful for animals too. Here's how to keep your pets safe, calm, and happy throughout your house move.
Before the Move: Visit the Vet
Schedule a vet check a few weeks before your move. Make sure vaccinations and flea/worm treatments are up to date. Ask about any anti-anxiety options if your pet is particularly nervous.
Keep Pets Away on Moving Day
Moving day is chaotic. Open doors and nervous removal teams are a dangerous combination for pets. If possible, have a family member or pet sitter take your animals away for the day. If not, confine them to one room with water, food, and a note on the door.
Cats: Special Consideration Needed
Cats are territorial and can be deeply unsettled by moves. When you arrive at the new home, confine your cat to one room with their familiar bed, litter tray, and food. After a few days, gradually allow access to more rooms. Keep them indoors for at least 2–3 weeks.
Dogs: Routine is Key
Dogs cope better with change when routines are maintained. Keep walking, feeding, and bedtime routines as normal as possible. Familiar toys and bedding help enormously.
Update Pet Microchips and Registration
This is legally required and critically important. Update your pet's microchip address and any registration databases before or immediately after your move.
Small Animals and Fish
Guinea pigs, rabbits, and birds should travel in secure, well-ventilated carriers in your car — not the removal van. Fish need specialist transport equipment; speak to your local aquarium shop for advice on safe fish transport.
