The Complete Moving House Checklist: 8 Weeks to Move Day
Our week-by-week checklist ensures nothing falls through the cracks when you're planning a house move.
8 Weeks Before: Get Organised
Book your removal company, start collecting quotes, create a home inventory, and begin decluttering. Donate, sell, or dispose of anything you don't want in your new home — it's much easier to declutter before the move than after.
6 Weeks Before: Admin & Paperwork
Notify your bank, HMRC, DVLA, GP, dentist, and electoral roll of your upcoming address change. Start the Royal Mail redirection service. Check your new home's utilities and arrange switchovers.
4 Weeks Before: Start Packing Non-Essentials
Begin packing books, ornaments, seasonal items, spare bedding, and anything else you won't need in the next month. Order boxes and packing materials if you need more.
2 Weeks Before: Intensify Packing
Pack everything except daily essentials. Dismantle and pack garden furniture, loft items, and garage contents. Confirm your removal booking and provide final details.
Moving Week
Confirm utilities are switched, pack your essentials box, defrost the freezer 24 hours before, and take meter readings at both properties. Have cash or card ready to tip the removal team!
Moving Day
Be ready when the team arrives. Do a final walk-through of every room, cupboard, and outbuilding. Take final meter readings and photograph any existing damage at your new property.
