How to Pack for a House Move: The Ultimate Guide
Packing is the part of moving that most people dread. Follow our step-by-step guide to pack like a professional.
Start Early — Earlier Than You Think
Most people underestimate how long packing takes. For a 3-bedroom home, plan for at least 2 full days of packing. Start 4–6 weeks before your move date by packing items you rarely use: books, seasonal decorations, spare bedding.
Get the Right Materials
Invest in quality double-walled boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, and proper tape. Cheap materials can mean broken belongings. We recommend sourcing boxes from a professional removal company rather than supermarkets for best protection.
Pack Room by Room
Always pack one room at a time and label every box with its destination room and a brief contents description. This makes unpacking at the other end dramatically faster and less stressful.
Protect Your Fragile Items
Wrap each fragile item individually in bubble wrap or packing paper. Place heavier items at the bottom of boxes and lighter items on top. Fill any gaps with crumpled paper to prevent shifting during transit.
Essentials Box
Pack a separate 'essentials' box that travels with you — not in the removal van. Include: kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, toilet paper, towels, phone chargers, medications, and anything you'll need on the first night.
Label, Label, Label
Every box should have a room label on the top and at least two sides. Consider a colour-coding system: blue for bedroom, red for kitchen, etc. This tells the removal team exactly where each box goes without needing to ask.
