How to Pack a Kitchen for a House Move

The kitchen is the most challenging room to pack in any house move. Here's our room-by-room guide to doing it properly.

Use the Right Boxes

Kitchen boxes should be small to medium — crockery and cookware is heavy. Double-walled boxes are essential. Large boxes filled with kitchen items become impossible to carry safely.

Plates and Bowls

Pack plates vertically, like records in a crate. Wrap each plate individually in packing paper and nestle them edge-to-edge. Packing plates flat means more stress on each plate and more breakages.

Glasses and Cups

Use specialist glass packing boxes if possible — they have cardboard cell dividers that hold each glass individually. If not, wrap each glass individually in several layers of packing paper and pack upright.

Pots, Pans, and Baking Trays

Nest pots and pans together with packing paper between each to prevent scratching. Place heaviest items at the bottom of the box. Lids can be packed separately or wrapped alongside their pan.

Small Appliances

Toasters, kettles, and microwaves should ideally be returned to their original boxes. If not, wrap in bubble wrap and fill the box with packing paper or clothing to prevent movement.

Food and Cleaning Products

Use up perishables in the weeks before your move. Seal any remaining tins and dry goods in a clearly labelled box. Cleaning products must be secured upright and transported separately — many removal companies won't carry them in the main load.
