What to Do With Items You Don't Want When Moving

Moving is the perfect time to declutter. Here's what to do with furniture, clothes, and household items you no longer need.

Sell It

Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, and eBay are brilliant for selling furniture, appliances, and household goods. You can also try Vinted for clothing. Start listing at least 4 weeks before your move.

Donate to Charity

Most charity shops collect large items free of charge. The British Heart Foundation furniture and electrical service, Emmaus, and local hospice shops all run collection services. Book early as slots fill up.

Give It Away

Freecycle and Olio are apps where you can offer items free to local people. Furniture, appliances, and toys vanish very quickly — often the same day you post them.

Recycle It Properly

Your local Hampshire recycling centre (Household Waste Recycling Centre) accepts most items for free. Check what your local centre accepts before loading the car.

Book a Skip or Clearance

For bulky waste that can't be sold or donated, a skip is often the most efficient solution. Alternatively, we can arrange a house clearance service in conjunction with your removal.

Don't Leave It to the Last Minute

The biggest mistake people make is trying to declutter in the final week before the move. Start 6–8 weeks out and you'll have time to sell, donate, and recycle properly — saving money on your removal too.
