What Removal Companies Won't Move (and Why)
There are some items that professional removal companies will not transport for safety or legal reasons. Here's what they are and what to do instead.
Hazardous Materials
Removal companies are legally restricted from transporting flammable, explosive, or corrosive materials. This includes: fuel cans (lawnmowers and generators must be drained), paint cans, aerosols, gas canisters, car batteries, and fireworks.
Cleaning and DIY Products
Bleach, paint stripper, solvents, and similar products are often restricted. Partially used tins of paint are a particular issue as they can spill. Use up or safely dispose of these before your move.
Food and Perishables
Most removal companies will not transport perishable food — not for safety reasons, but for practical ones. Fresh food in a removal lorry risks contamination of other items. Use up or donate food stocks before moving.
Firearms and Weapons
Licensed firearms and ammunition must be transported by the owner in line with their firearms certificate. Removal companies cannot transport these under standard goods-in-transit insurance.
Plants
Large plants, particularly large trees or shrubs in heavy pots, are often declined. Small house plants in secure containers are generally fine. Speak to your company when booking if you have a large plant collection.
What To Do With Restricted Items
Drain fuel from garden machinery before the move. Take hazardous materials to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre. Transport firearms yourself. Use up or donate food. If in doubt, ask us — we'll always give you an honest answer about what we can and can't take.
