Removals Insurance Explained: What You Need and What to Avoid
Understanding removals insurance before your move could save you thousands. Here's exactly what you need to know.
What Is Goods-in-Transit Insurance?
Goods-in-transit insurance covers your belongings while they're being moved from A to B by a removal company. It protects against accidental damage, loss, and theft during transit.
What Every Removal Company Should Have
At minimum, your removal company should carry goods-in-transit insurance and public liability insurance. Always ask to see proof and check that the coverage level is appropriate for the value of your belongings.
Does Your Home Insurance Cover Your Move?
Some home insurance policies include cover for items in transit on moving day, but many do not. Check your policy documents specifically — don't assume. Call your insurer if you're unsure.
High-Value Items: Special Consideration
Standard goods-in-transit policies typically limit coverage for individual items above £500–£1,000. If you own valuable art, jewellery, antiques, or musical instruments, speak to both your removal company and your insurer about additional cover.
Self-Pack Moves and Insurance
If you pack your own boxes, most removal companies will not cover damage to the contents of those boxes unless the damage was caused by an accident to the vehicle or the boxes being dropped. Professionally packed items have broader coverage.
Getting Claims Right
If anything is damaged during your move, report it to the removal company in writing within 7 days. Photograph all damage immediately. Having pre-move photographs of valuable items significantly supports any claim.
