Moving Elderly Parents: A Compassionate and Practical Guide
Helping an elderly parent move home requires patience, planning, and sensitivity. Here's how to make it as smooth as possible.
Start the Conversation Early
Discussing a move with an elderly parent requires time and sensitivity. Don't rush the decision. Allow space for them to process the idea, voice concerns, and feel genuinely involved in every decision. Forced moves cause distress — consensual, planned moves can be positive.
Involve Them in Every Decision
Which furniture comes? Which room will the familiar armchair go in? What photographs will go on the walls? Every decision made with your parent — rather than for them — preserves their sense of agency and dignity during what can feel like a very vulnerable time.
Sorting Decades of Belongings
An elderly parent may have lived in the same home for 30–50 years. Sorting belongings is emotionally intense and takes much longer than expected. Plan multiple sorting sessions over weeks rather than days. Use the 'definitely keep, maybe, and let go' system.
On the Day
Keep move day as calm as possible. If the physical activity will be distressing, consider having a trusted friend or family member stay with your parent away from the property while the move happens, then bring them to the new home once it's set up and familiar.
Recreate Familiarity
In the new home, place familiar items in natural positions — the favourite chair by the window, photos on familiar walls, the same mug on the same side of the kitchen. Familiar sensory cues help enormously with settling in.
