How to Move an Aquarium: A Safe Guide to Moving Fish
Moving a fish tank is one of the trickiest household moves. Here's how to do it safely for both you and your fish.
Plan Well in Advance
Moving an aquarium requires preparation. Start planning at least 2 weeks before your move. For large or complex marine tanks, consider specialist aquarium movers — the stress on marine fish and corals during a move can be severe.
What You'll Need
Battery-powered air pump, fish bags or specialist transport containers, lidded buckets for tank water, polystyrene insulated boxes, water conditioner, a heater for cold-water or tropical fish in winter.
The Day Before
Do not feed your fish for 24 hours before the move. This reduces waste and helps maintain water quality during transport. Prepare your transport containers with tank water to maintain the water chemistry fish are used to.
Move Day
Remove fish last and transport them in sealed bags or lidded buckets with an air pump running. Never transport fish in an unsealed container. Keep water temperature stable — use insulated boxes in winter and avoid direct sunlight in summer.
The Tank Itself
Drain the tank to about 20% of its water level for transport. Remove all ornaments and substrate separately. Larger tanks (4ft+) should have additional support underneath during transit — the weight of even a small amount of water and gravel is significant.
Setting Up at the New Home
Re-establish the tank and filter as quickly as possible. Use the saved tank water to help maintain the cycle. Test water parameters before reintroducing fish. Monitor closely for the first 48 hours — moved fish are stressed and more vulnerable to disease.
