Moving to Portsmouth: A Complete Newcomer's Guide
Portsmouth is a city unlike any other in England. Here's what you need to know before you make the move.
Portsmouth: Britain's Only Island City
Portsmouth is unique in England — a city built on Portsea Island, with a long and proud naval heritage. It's vibrant, unpretentious, and more affordable than almost any comparable city on the south coast. The waterfront regeneration has transformed large parts of the city in recent years.
Best Areas for Families
Drayton and Cosham in the north of the island offer more space and calmer residential streets. Emsworth Road and Copnor are popular with families for their community feel and schools. Southsea is ideal for those wanting city amenities and seafront access.
Southsea
Southsea is Portsmouth's bohemian heart — independent cafés, galleries, great restaurants, and direct access to the seafront. It's increasingly popular with young professionals and creative types, with property prices still significantly below Brighton for a comparable atmosphere.
Schools
Portsmouth Grammar School is an independent day school with an excellent reputation. Portsmouth College is the main sixth form. State secondary provision includes Admiral Lord Nelson School and Priory School. Research catchments carefully before committing to an address.
Transport
Portsmouth is on the main London Waterloo line (90 minutes direct). The M27 provides east-west road links. The city is also well served by ferries to the Isle of Wight, France, and Spain — a genuine bonus for frequent travellers.
The Waterfront Transformation
Gunwharf Quays, the Historic Dockyard, and the Spinnaker Tower have made Portsmouth's waterfront a genuine destination. The ongoing development of the Port Solent area and Northern Quarter continues to add new amenities to the city.
