Moving to Gosport: Life on the Peninsula
Gosport is one of Hampshire's most underrated places to live. Here's what life on the peninsula is really like.
The Gosport Paradox
Gosport has spectacular views of Portsmouth Harbour and Spinnaker Tower, is a short ferry ride from the city centre, has some of the lowest house prices in Hampshire, and is consistently ranked among the least visited places in England. The gap between reality and reputation is enormous.
The Ferry Factor
Gosport is connected to Portsmouth by a frequent passenger ferry (no cars) — a 3-minute crossing that costs pennies. For anyone working in Portsmouth city centre or commuting via Portsmouth station, this makes Gosport genuinely practical.
Property Prices
Gosport offers outstanding value. A 3-bedroom semi in Gosport averages £200,000–£280,000 — remarkable for a town with harbour views and easy access to a major city. The waterfront areas around Alverstoke and Stokes Bay attract premium pricing but remain affordable by national standards.
Best Areas
Alverstoke is the most desirable area — conservation village, excellent restaurants, and harbour views. Lee-on-the-Solent, technically Gosport district, has a seafront promenade and popular cafés. Stubbington offers a quieter residential feel.
Schools
Bay House School in Alverstoke is highly regarded. St Vincent College is the main sixth form and FE college. There are several good primary schools across the borough.
Our Honest Assessment
Gosport won't suit everyone — car access in and out of the town can be slow at peak times. But for quality of life, value for money, and community feel, it deserves far more attention than it gets. We'd be glad to help you make the move.
