Moving to Alton: East Hampshire's Market Town Gem
Alton is one of Hampshire's most characterful market towns. Here's everything you need to know before you move.
Alton's Character
Alton has a proper market town character that many Hampshire towns have lost — a busy high street with independent shops, a great market, period architecture, and a strong community identity. The famous Mid-Hants Watercress Line steam railway adds a genuinely unique charm.
Commuting
Alton is the terminus of the South Western Railway line from London Waterloo. Journey times are around 70–80 minutes direct. The A31 provides fast road access to Guildford, Farnham, and the M3 at Winchester. Many Alton residents work in Farnham, Basingstoke, or Winchester.
Schools
Alton College is the town's sixth form and has an excellent reputation. Amery Hill School and Treloar's (specialist school) serve secondary age pupils. There are several well-regarded primary schools in and around the town.
Property
Alton's property market sits at a comfortable mid-point for Hampshire. A 3-bedroom semi averages £350,000–£420,000. The surrounding villages — Holybourne, Beech, Bentworth — are sought after for those wanting a more rural setting.
Outdoor Life
The North Downs Way and many other walking and cycling routes are accessible directly from the town. The Alice Holt Forest is 15 minutes away. The watercress beds and Wey Valley provide beautiful local walking.
Why We Love It
Alton retains an authenticity that larger Hampshire towns have lost. If you want a proper community, a real high street, and beautiful countryside on your doorstep without paying Winchester prices, Alton deserves serious attention.
