Getting Around Hampshire: Transport Links for New Residents

From the M27 to fast trains to London, Hampshire has excellent transport links. Here's what new residents need to know.

The Road Network

Hampshire is exceptionally well connected by road. The M3 connects Winchester and Basingstoke to London. The M27 runs east-west connecting Portsmouth, Southampton, and Bournemouth. The A3(M) links Portsmouth to the A3 corridor to London.

Rail Services

South Western Railway is the main operator, serving London Waterloo from Southampton (75 mins), Winchester (57 mins), Basingstoke (47 mins), and Fareham. Great Western serves the county from Basingstoke westward.

Local Bus Services

First Hampshire & Dorset, Stagecoach, and Go South Coast operate most local bus services. Coverage is good between towns but can be limited in rural areas — check routes carefully if you're car-free.

Cycling

Hampshire has an expanding cycle network. Southampton's cycle lanes have improved significantly in recent years. The New Forest is world-class for leisure cycling. Sustrans National Route 2 runs through the county.

Ferries

Wightlink and Hovertravel serve the Isle of Wight from Portsmouth and Southsea. Red Funnel operates Southampton to Cowes. International ferries operate from Portsmouth to France and Spain.

Southampton Airport

Southampton Airport (SOU) serves primarily European destinations from a compact, convenient terminal. Heathrow and Gatwick are 90 minutes and 100 minutes by road or via direct trains.
